The Golden Ratio (1.618) forms a spiral because when you divide a golden rectangle into squares, the corners of those squares trace a curve. This creates spiral which often appears in parts of nature such as the wood grain in trees (dendrology), because it's an efficient growth pattern that maintains the same shape as it scales.
